Route Planning

Planning a route for a group ride is not as daunting as it may first appear, the following are some notes on things to do or think about when planning a Group Ride.

Route Planning

General

  • Think about where you want to
    • Start
    • Stop for Lunch
    • Finish
  • Length of ride
    • Distance – 160-230 miles in the UK
    • Time – depends on the time of year but generally 9:30 to 17:00 is a good guide
  • Roads
    • Think about what people want to do and type of riding they enjoy
    • Thinks about the experience of riders and type of bikes
      • Avoid “farm tracks” if everybody is on sports bikes
    • Mixture of A, B and unclassified roads
    • Avoid motorways and dual carriageways unless they are essential
    • Mixture of roads with open bends and technical challenging sections
    • Roads with National speed limits
  • Comfort Breaks
    • Maximum riding time between comfort breaks should be between 1.5 and 2hrs
    • Breaks should be 30-40 mins, slightly longer for lunch
    • Locations to include fuel, toilets, refreshments
    • Try and ensure they are going to be open and have room/can cater for the anticipated number of riders

Starting Point

  • Find a location
    • That would suit the majority of people
    • Easy to find
    • Fuel is available
    • Refreshments and toilets

Fuel Stops/Comfort Breaks

  • Make sure you and the TEC have the Knights Templar marked High Viz vests
  • Exchange mobile phone numbers so that in the event of your separation or an accident you can contact each other.
